What are Flower Essences?
Simply put, flower essences are extracts from the flower or plant used to treat people and animals.
Dr. Edward Bach, a famous English physician, developed the Bach Flower Remedies when he was working as a homeopathic practitioner and devoted the last years of his life to researching and developing his remedies, from 1930 onwards.
Dr. Bach believed that diseases of the body come about as a result of imbalances or negativity at the level of the soul, and by correcting the problem here healing would result and the body would heal on all levels. The flower remedies act to balance inharmonies in the emotional and spiritual body, and bring about a gentle healing by bringing the body back in balance with itself.
Each essence treats a particular imbalance and they can be used alone or in combination depending what the problem is.
You can take them along with any current medication, even give them to pets and children.
How to make your own Flower Essences
Generally speaking, the flowers that will be most helpful for you are usually growing close by. Take a walk around your yard and local contryside if able, and see what flowers are in bloom right now.
Every flower has a different vibrational signature, and offers a different remedy. Do some research on the flowers you wish to make essence from to see what it is helpful for (google is good).
There is really no right or wrong with plant essences, but there are several suggestions that might make it easier and more successful for you.
A sunny day is best, but it can be done on rainy or cloudy days. My first essence was made during a thunderstorm and it was quite powerful. Use your discretion.
A clear glass bowl....crystal is best, but not absolutely necessary. If you have another shallow bowl that you feel attracted too, by all means use it. Metal or plastic is not recommended. Anything used should be scrupulously clean.
You will need some good spring water, or even rain water, not tap water as it is treated with chemicals. Please be sure the water is pure and clean.
You will also need some Brandy to preserve the essence. Most recommend Brandy, but each alcohol has it's own vibration and you can use something else if it appeals.
The best time to collect flowers for essence in about 9am when the dew is just drying off, but like I mentioned before, there is no right or wrong, and some flowers are best made by evening, like Evening Primrose.
So now you've picked out the flower you would like to make an essence of, and have a clear glass bowl or other receptacle and some clean water.
The very first thing you must do before anything is go to the flower you wish to use, and just look at it, admire it and notice all the details, ask it if it is willing to be picked for flower remedy. You will know if it is a no or yes, but the way you feel, if you feel excited and happy then it is a yes. A no is a feeling of 'oh I better not'. Most flowers are willing to help us, but if it isn't for you, or for whatever reason, sometimes it's a no. I've only had one no for all the flowers I have approached.
At the pre appointed time, take your bowl about halfway full of good clean water and go to the flower or plant. Ask it again, as you cut the flower close to the bloom and let it fall into the bowl.
Some people like their flowers facing up during this time, or facing the bowl, it's up to you. I say it depends on the flower and the shape ect.
Leave the bowl in the direct sun. It's important that no shadows cover or cross it during the time it is brewing. The recommended time to leave it out is three hours.
At the end of the pre determined time, go outside with the Brandy or other alcohol and the bottle you wish to use to decant it. I prefer dark colored glass, such as amber, green or blue. I also take with me a small strainer to strain off the herbs. You can use cheescloth or any other straining method you wish to use.
I sometimes use a glass measuring cup to strain the flowers, then pour that into the bottles. If the bottles are big enough, you can strain it right into the bottle. Only fill it up halfway at the most with the flower water. Fill the bottle now with Brandy, cap it, give it a shake, and label it right away. Your Mother essence is ready.
Be sure to give the used flowers back to the plant with thanks for it's help.
I like to drink the last few drops of the flower water left in the bowl. It's wonderful!
Mother essence will last almost forever, if used carefully.
From the Mother essence you can make a Stock bottle with 1/3 Brandy and 2/3 water and just a few drops from the Mother essence. Maybe 3 or 7 drops, whatever number appeals to you.
From the Stock bottle, you can make a remedy bottle. I sometimes just use the Stock bottle, but it can go a lot further if you make a remedy bottle. For the remedy bottle, do the same as the stock 1/3 brandy to 2/3 water and just a few drops of essence.
With flower essences, less is more!
Ways to use Flower Essences
You can use a whole dropper full or just a very few drops:
~Under the tongue
~In a glass of water
~In the bath water
~On pulse points
~A few drops on food before eating
~Use your imagination!
As long as you respect the flower and take it with intent, there is no right or wrong!
